quick PS3 Update

I just made a trip to Sungei Wang today. Here’s the next-gen console prices:

PS3 - Rm2500
Wii - Rm1800
Xbox360 - Rm1000

And for well-meaning girlfriends, don’t get the ps3 ! There’s only 2 games out in malaysia, that is Genji2 and RidgeRacer7. Hardly worth getting a Ps3 for. Plus the online capability sucks ! Not sure if they have PS online update service in malaysia though.

I’m not too sure about the Wii either. You have to fork out rm250 for every game ? Ouch.

Wow, the xbox360 is reallllly looking attractive at that price. Damn you microsoft, damn you !

I promise , this is the last post about video games. For now …. eheh.

From one console gamer to another:

PS3 - Beautiful piece of plastic, ability to upgrade hard drive, Blu-Ray (double edged sword, Blue Dragon for 360 needs 3 DVD 9 to stuff)

Wii - Small size, girlfriend friendly (Wii sports can be really addictive for them, I know mine is), good workout when playing Bowling and Baseball, games typically appeal to a wider audience in contrast to the 360 and PS3

360 - Library of games, Xbox Live, Gears of War and Halo 3.

The PS3 you can find some games from those who bought the console without the bundle to offset the cost. Resistance is pretty nice and so does Genji2.

2007 would be a good time to buy the Wii since by then everyone would know whether the controller is only a novelty or not. Plus Mario and Metroid will be out by then and so will a price drop (because currently Malaysian distributors are charging a premium)

The 360? It is a good machine with a good library of games, not to mention a year’s worth of patches. Downside? Damn shitty big powerbrick and hot as hell console :P

Oh ya, also if you intend on getting the 360, please do get it from Gamer’s Hideout at Curve Cineleisure.
In the event that your 360 doesn’t work just after you buy it, they have this good 1 to 1 swap policy, which is never been done in Sungei Wang.

Definitely no fanboyism :) As much as I love my 360 I would definitely like to see all the consoles be a success. You need competition to keep the momentum of innovation going forward, which is a good thing for consumers. It is like AMD vs Intel, as much as I love AMD procs I definitely wanted Intel to come out with a killer proc to match AMD so that AMD would have no choice but to do the same. If any of them were to leave the market you only have one company dominating which is bad for business and innovation. I could say the same for Nvidia until ATI brought out the 8500 series of cards, culminating with the 9700 pro.

Every console has its pros and cons, each suited to a certain segment of the targeted audience. PS3 would definitely be a bit hit in Japan (the Japs would always support their own products, more so when you see a minister in Japan lambasting Sony for not creating the iPod instead of Apple) and so will the Wii. The PS3 will be huge because of its branding, its sleek look (a dust and scratch magnet as well), machine specs and not to mention the PS game library has always been huge. 2007 will definitely be a definitive moment for all 3 consoles as they need to keep the momentum going, games need to be launched, services improved, new features introduced yada yada. For Microsoft, since they now have the upper hand over Sony they definitely need to continually improve their online services as that is biggest selling point of their console.

As for the Wii, well as I mentioned, alot of people I spoke to love it because it is so easy to get into (cue my GF asking me why I bought the 360 instead of the Wii :P) and if Sony and Microsoft aren’t careful, the Wii will topple both as the “must have” console of 2007.

Yes , 2007 will be a very important year. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

I know I’ll get a ps3 , but only probably after 2 years later. If they somehow manage to crack it. And if I manage to get a true HD tv by then. Eheh.

Heck , maybe in 2 years times , i’ll have the Wii and the Ps3.

I’m happy with my ps2 at the moment. Final Fantasy XII , argh.
