A gig at the library. That’s right, these people get paid to make noise in the library. That’s Karra Frost on the right. You can melt if she sings and smiles at you :)

Time for some updates!

First things first, I got a job! I’ll be a web programmer and I start this Friday! I can’t stress how happy I am, because I always wanted to work overseas and now I have a chance.

You see, the employer actually Googled my name and found this blog. Thank my lucky stars that he has a sense of humor! I heard his wife and daughter read the comics as well. Oh, and I’m their first international student that’s working for them.

As to hobbies, I’ve been reading a lot of books lately. They range from Zen, the philosophy of the Matrix (sci-fi, cyberpunk, romanticism and existentialism), chaos theory and logic. Yes, mind blowing stuff. Look forward to some interesting blog entries here.

On to more personal stuff. You see, I don’t normally believe in long-distance relationships. Nor do I believe in fate, but I think I have something going on with a certain miss j. We write messages to each other and I call once in a while. Sometimes I’m surprised that someone so far away can make me feel the way I do for her.

I also regret to say that I somehow can’t really draw ‘girls are evil’ comics for now. Blame it on her, she’s just too sweet to me …

pop vs elitism

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Have you ever felt like your music taste is better than others? Ever disliked a band or artiste because they’re too commercialized? Scoffed at a person just because he likes Justin Timberlake or My Chemical Romance? Well, take your head out of your elitist ass.

Or maybe you only listen to music from the charts? If a lot of people like it, it must be good right ? Forget marketing and chart placement (yes, music labels pay to get their artists in chart rotation), the charts are where the great music are! I got news for you, there’s a whole world of music out there beyond your little shell.

I used to be in both categories.

In my tween years, I would follow the Billboard charts and eventually got into The Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls and Savage Garden. They were ruling the charts back in those days, so I guess that was the best music back then. Looking back, that is quite an embarrassing music taste.

Later on, I adopted an elitist music taste. I prided myself in ‘discovering’ new music that wasn’t popular and disliked anything too poppy. If a band became too successful, I would label them ’sell outs’ and stop listening to them. If people introduced new music to me, I would scoff at their music taste because I considered mine superior.

You realize that both approaches are bullshit? One is that I’m just a follower and the other is that I’m just pretending to be unique.

Now apply this to real life and you can actually study people.

On one hand, you have people who only ‘follow’ and do the popular things. They are indecisive and never take risks. Oh you know, the ones that often ask “who else is going?” when attending an event.

On the other hand, you have people who criticize group behavior. They consider themselves special, have unique hobbies and often say “People just don’t understand”. Then they wonder why they don’t have much friends.

Perhaps the best way is somewhere in the middle. Where you have a clear sense of direction, but you’re also comfortable to go with the flow. A path which you forge on your own, while in harmony with the environment around you.

As for me? I’m still looking for that middle ground in life.

white power!

Racism is bad for you kids !

This scene is from American History X

Speaking of racism, yesterday me and Leon were walking on the Goodwill bridge and a bunch of teenagers were making fun of us:

“Hey chinks, I want to eat some FLY LICE!”

I totally ignored the guy but Leon was offended and he called them cunts. This is probably the second race-related incident I’ve seen here in Brisbane.

The other time was when the 5 of us were walking. Leon and Mr Foo had eggs thrown at them. Me and Kenny were fortunate though, cause we were walking behind. See, it pays to walk behind sometimes.

Well, I only hope these degenerate racist youth grow up.

We’re all human, after all.
